Hippos and Rhinos Quiz

5 rhino species, hippos vs people deaths, and African megafauna.

Hippos and Rhinos Quiz: Test Your Knowledge

Pablo Escobar imported 4 hippos to his Colombian estate in the 1980s — and after his death they escaped, becoming the world's only invasive hippo population, now 100+ strong. This quiz covers the 5 rhino species, hippo biology, and why hippos are surprisingly closely related to whales.

How It Works

Each round presents 10 randomized questions from a pool of 50, with four multiple-choice options and instant feedback after every answer. Your final score comes with a performance tier and shareable results.

What You'll Learn

You'll cover all five rhino species — white, black, Indian, Javan, Sumatran — and the conservation crises facing each, the hippopotamus and its tiny pygmy cousin, the cocaine hippos of Colombia, the deadliness of hippos in Africa, and the surprising fact that hippos are most closely related to whales.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hippos related to rhinos?

No — despite both being huge African herbivores, hippos are most closely related to whales (clade Cetancodonta), while rhinos are related to horses and tapirs. They evolved their shared body plan independently.

How many rhino species exist?

Five living species: white rhino, black rhino, Indian rhino, Javan rhino, and Sumatran rhino. The northern white rhinoceros subspecies is functionally extinct — only two females remain.

Why are hippos so deadly?

Hippos kill an estimated 500 people per year in Africa, more than any other large mammal on the continent. They are highly aggressive and territorial in water, and 3,000 kg of hippo charging your boat is hard to survive.
