Everybody thinks they're good at science until a question stops being "name the planet" and starts being "explain why it doesn't fall into the sun." There's a cliff. On one side is trivia you absorbed from documentaries and the back of cereal boxes. On the other side is the stuff that requires you to actually reason. This is a tour of that cliff — and an invitation to walk right up to the edge.

We're not interested in "what color is chlorophyll." We're interested in whether you can survive four fields that each have their own way of humbling people. Particle physics. Chemistry. Genetics. Astronomy. Get through all four with a respectable score and you've earned the right to be insufferable at dinner parties.

A real scientist isn't someone who knows all the answers. It's someone who knows exactly which questions are hard — and why. These quizzes are built around the hard questions.

Round One: Particle Physics (where intuition goes to die)

Start here because it's the great filter. The subatomic world does not care about your common sense, and the questions in our Particle Physics quiz are designed to expose exactly that.
