Of the approximately 2,224 passengers and crew aboard the RMS Titanic, only about 710 survived — roughly 32%. The majority of deaths were caused by hypothermia in the freezing North Atlantic water rather than drowning.
First-class passengers had the highest survival rate at about 62%, compared to 41% for second class and only 25% for third class. First-class women had a 97% survival rate, while third-class men survived at a rate of just 16%.
The water temperature was approximately 28°F (-2°C) when the Titanic sank. At that temperature, most people would succumb to hypothermia within 15 to 45 minutes, which is why so few of those who ended up in the water survived.
