What You'll Learn

You'll explore Albania's dramatic coastline along the Adriatic and Ionian seas, its tumultuous history from the Illyrians through Ottoman rule and Enver Hoxha's isolationist dictatorship, unique cultural traditions like iso-polyphonic singing, and delicious cuisine from byrek to tavë kosi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Albania have so many bunkers?

Communist dictator Enver Hoxha ordered the construction of approximately 750,000 concrete bunkers between the 1960s and 1980s — roughly one for every four citizens. Hoxha was deeply paranoid about foreign invasion, so bunkers were built everywhere from beaches and farmland to city centers and mountaintops. Most remain today, repurposed as cafes, mushroom farms, or art installations.

Was Mother Teresa Albanian?

Yes, Mother Teresa (born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910) was ethnically Albanian, though she was born in Skopje, which is now the capital of North Macedonia. She is considered a national hero in Albania, and Tirana's international airport is named Mother Teresa International Airport in her honor.

Is Albania safe for tourists?

Albania is generally very safe for tourists and has experienced a massive tourism boom, growing from around 1.2 million visitors in 2005 to over 10 million in recent years. Albanians are famously hospitable, and violent crime against tourists is rare. The Albanian Riviera, Berat, Gjirokastër, and Tirana are popular and well-traveled destinations.
