Azerbaijan was producing half of the world's oil by 1900 β the Nobel brothers built their fortune in Baku's oil fields before establishing the Nobel Prize. Perched between Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, and the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan is a country of remarkable contrasts: ancient fire temples worshipped by Zoroastrians stand near ultramodern skyscrapers, while mud volcanoes bubble alongside offshore oil platforms that have stood since 1949.
Each round presents 10 randomized multiple-choice questions drawn from a pool of 50, so every playthrough is different. You get instant feedback with explanations after each answer, plus a shareable score at the end.
You'll explore Baku's iconic Flame Towers and UNESCO-listed Old City, the eternal flames of Ateshgah and Yanar Dag, the world's first offshore oil platform at Neft Dashlari, Azerbaijan's pioneering role as the first secular democratic Muslim republic, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Mugham music traditions, carpet weaving heritage, and the country's surprising mud volcanos β home to nearly 400 of the world's estimated 700.
Azerbaijan earns the nickname "Land of Fire" (Odlar Yurdu) from its ancient natural gas seeps that cause flames to burn spontaneously from the earth. Sites like Yanar Dag (Burning Mountain) have flickered continuously for centuries, and the Ateshgah Fire Temple near Baku was a sacred pilgrimage site for Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs who worshipped these eternal flames. The country's very name may derive from a Median satrap named Atropates, whose title also relates to fire. This fiery heritage is reflected on Azerbaijan's flag through its official title.
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a decades-long territorial dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region β a mountainous enclave internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but populated predominantly by ethnic Armenians. The first war erupted as the Soviet Union dissolved (1988β1994), resulting in Armenian control of the region. A second war in 2020 saw Azerbaijan recapture much of the territory. In September 2023, Azerbaijan launched a military operation that dissolved the self-declared Armenian republic, and the remaining ethnic Armenian population largely fled to Armenia.
Azerbaijan sits in the South Caucasus, a region at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Most of the country lies in Asia, but a small portion extends into Europe across the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Geopolitically, Azerbaijan is often grouped with Eastern Europe or Eurasia. It is a member of the Council of Europe and competes in European sporting events including UEFA football and the Eurovision Song Contest, which it hosted in 2012.
