Comoros Quiz

Volcanic islands where ancient coelacanth fish swim and ylang-ylang perfumes the air.

Comoros Quiz: Test Your Knowledge of the Perfume Islands

The Comoros produces roughly 80% of the world's ylang-ylang, the fragrant flower essential to perfumes like Chanel No. 5. But this tiny Indian Ocean archipelago tucked between Madagascar and Mozambique offers far more than exotic scents. From the active volcanic crater of Mount Karthala to the prehistoric coelacanth swimming in its deep waters, Comoros packs extraordinary natural and cultural wonders into just 2,235 square kilometers.

How It Works

Each round presents 10 randomized questions from a pool of 50, with four multiple-choice options and instant feedback after every answer. Your final score comes with a performance tier and shareable results.

What You'll Learn

You'll explore the four main islands, Mount Karthala's dramatic eruptions, the living-fossil coelacanth, the fragrant ylang-ylang and vanilla economy, Arab and French colonial history, over 20 coups and political upheavals, the Grand Mariage ceremony, and the ongoing Mayotte sovereignty dispute.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a coelacanth?

The coelacanth is a prehistoric fish once thought to have gone extinct 65 million years ago alongside the dinosaurs. A living specimen was discovered in 1938 off the coast of South Africa, and a population has since been found in the deep waters around the Comoros Islands.

Why does France control Mayotte?

When the Comoros held its independence referendum in 1974, three islands voted for independence from France while Mayotte voted to remain French. Mayotte became a full French overseas department in 2011. The Comoros government still claims sovereignty over Mayotte, a position supported by the African Union and the United Nations General Assembly.

What is ylang-ylang?

Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) is a tropical tree whose fragrant yellow flowers are steam-distilled to produce essential oil. The oil is a key ingredient in many luxury perfumes, including Chanel No. 5. The Comoros is the world's largest producer, supplying roughly 80% of global ylang-ylang oil.
