King George VI awarded the entire island of Malta the George Cross in 1942 for heroism during WWII bombing. Malta is the only country to receive this honor, and the cross appears on its national flag.
Malta's medieval walled city Mdina was used as King's Landing in Season 1, the Azure Window on Gozo served as the Dothraki wedding location, and Fort Ricasoli doubled as the Red Keep gates.
