Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Burma change its name to Myanmar?

The military junta renamed the country from Burma to Myanmar in 1989, one year after violently suppressing the 8888 pro-democracy uprising. "Myanmar" is the formal literary form of the country's name in the Burmese language, while "Burma" is derived from the spoken colloquial form. Many pro-democracy activists and some Western governments initially refused to use the new name as a form of protest against the junta.

What happened to Aung San Suu Kyi?

Aung San Suu Kyi spent approximately 15 years under house arrest between 1989 and 2010 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. After her release she led her party, the National League for Democracy, to a landslide election victory in 2015 and became State Counsellor. On February 1, 2021, the military staged a coup, arrested her, and charged her with multiple offences. She was sentenced to a total of 27 years in prison.

How many temples are in Bagan?

At its height between the 11th and 13th centuries, the Bagan Kingdom built over 10,000 temples, pagodas, and monasteries across a 104 km² plain. Today approximately 2,200 structures survive. Bagan was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.
