🇳🇮 Nicaragua Quiz

Volcanoes, colonial cities, and the largest country in Central America.

Nicaragua Quiz: Test Your Knowledge

Lake Nicaragua is the only freshwater lake in the world containing bull sharks — they swam 200 kilometres up the San Juan River from the Caribbean to adapt to freshwater life. That remarkable ecological fact is just one of the surprises this 50-question Nicaragua quiz holds. From the colonial splendor of Granada to the active lava lake of Masaya Volcano, from the Sandinista Revolution to the canal that almost was, Nicaragua is a country of extraordinary stories hiding in plain sight.

How It Works

Each round presents 10 randomized multiple-choice questions drawn from a pool of 50, so every playthrough is different. You get instant feedback with explanations after each answer, plus a shareable score at the end.

What You'll Learn

Questions cover Nicaragua's geography (the largest nation in Central America, 19 volcanoes, Lake Nicaragua, Ometepe Island, the Mosquito Coast), colonial history (Granada founded 1524, León's magnificent cathedral), political turbulence (Somoza dictatorship, the Sandinista Revolution, the Contra War and Iran-Contra scandal, Violeta Chamorro), cultural traditions (gallo pinto, El Gueguense, marimba, baseball passion), extreme sports (volcano boarding on Cerro Negro), unique ecology (Bosawas Biosphere Reserve), and Nicaraguan food and drink.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Lake Nicaragua really have freshwater sharks?

Yes. Bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) swim about 200 kilometres up the Río San Juan from the Caribbean Sea into Lake Nicaragua. Scientists initially thought these were a landlocked subspecies, but research confirmed they are the same bull shark species capable of surviving in both salt and fresh water. Attacks on humans have been recorded in the lake.

What is volcano boarding in Nicaragua?

Volcano boarding involves sliding down the steep black ash slopes of Cerro Negro — an active volcano near León — on a wooden or metal board. Participants can reach speeds of around 50 mph (80 km/h). Cerro Negro is one of Central America's youngest and most active volcanoes, making the experience genuinely thrilling. It was pioneered around 2004-2005 and is now a major attraction in Nicaragua.

What was the Sandinista Revolution?

The Sandinista Revolution was a Marxist-inspired uprising led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) that overthrew the Somoza family dictatorship in July 1979. The Sandinistas, led by Daniel Ortega, introduced literacy programs and land reform but also faced a US-backed Contra insurgency throughout the 1980s. Violeta Chamorro defeated Ortega in elections in 1990, but he returned to power in 2006 and has remained president since.
