You'll explore Paraguay's Guaraní language and why nearly everyone speaks it, the engineering marvel of the Itaipú Dam, the devastating War of the Triple Alliance that nearly erased the country, the wild Chaco wilderness that makes up 60% of the territory, the tradition of tereré (cold mate), and why Paraguay's flag is the only national flag with different emblems on each side.
Paraguay has two official languages: Spanish and Guaraní. About 90% of the population speaks Guaraní, making Paraguay the only country in Latin America where an indigenous language is spoken by the majority, including non-indigenous mestizo citizens. Many Paraguayans mix the two languages in everyday speech, a hybrid known as Jopara.
The War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870) was the deadliest conflict in South American history. Paraguay, under President Francisco Solano López, fought against a combined alliance of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Paraguay lost an estimated 60–90% of its male population and roughly half its total population, along with significant territory. The country took over a century to recover.
Paraguay's flag is the only national flag in the world with different emblems on each side. The front (obverse) features the national coat of arms — a yellow star surrounded by a palm and olive branch with the words “República del Paraguay.” The back (reverse) displays the Treasury seal — a lion guarding a liberty cap with the motto “Paz y Justicia” (Peace and Justice).
