The Philippines is composed of 7,641 islands as surveyed by NAMRIA. Only about 2,000 are inhabited and roughly 5,000 remain unnamed. The archipelago stretches over 300,000 square kilometres of land area and is divided into three major island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The three main island groups are Luzon in the north, the Visayas in the centre, and Mindanao in the south. Luzon is the largest and most populous, containing the capital Manila and Quezon City. The Visayas include Cebu and Bohol, while Mindanao is the second-largest island and home to Davao City.
The Philippines declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, proclaimed by General Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite. However, Spain then ceded the Philippines to the United States through the Treaty of Paris later that year. Full sovereignty was not achieved until July 4, 1946, when the U.S. granted independence after World War II.
