Sub-Antarctic island of king penguins, Shackleton's grave, and the world's most southerly whaling stations
South Georgia is home to over 5 million seals and tens of millions of breeding seabirds — yet has zero permanent human residents. This remote sub-Antarctic island, combined with the South Sandwich Islands, forms one of Britain's most spectacular and least-visited Overseas Territories. From Ernest Shackleton's legendary rescue crossing to the abandoned whaling stations of Grytviken, South Georgia is a place of extraordinary wildlife and dramatic human history.
Each round presents 10 randomized questions from a pool of 50, with four multiple-choice options and instant feedback after every answer. Your final score comes with a performance tier and shareable results.
You'll explore South Georgia's geography and wildlife, Captain Cook's first landing in 1775, the whaling industry and its abandoned stations, Ernest Shackleton's Endurance expedition and heroic crossing, king penguin and elephant seal colonies, the Argentine occupation and recovery during the 1982 Falklands War, and the remarkable conservation success story of the island's rewilding.
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a British Overseas Territory. The UK has administered the islands since 1908, with a brief interruption during the Argentine occupation of April–June 1982. Argentina still claims sovereignty over the islands.
Ernest Shackleton is buried in the small cemetery at Grytviken, the former whaling station on South Georgia. He died of a heart attack aboard his ship Quest on January 5, 1922, on the eve of another Antarctic expedition. His grave is a place of pilgrimage for explorers and adventurers.
King Edward Point, adjacent to the old whaling station at Grytviken, serves as the administrative capital of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It hosts a small British Antarctic Survey station and a government officer who serves as the Commissioner's local representative.
