The People's Republic of China considers Taiwan a breakaway province because the Republic of China government, which fled to the island in 1949 after losing the Chinese Civil War, never formally renounced its claim to all of China. Beijing views unification as essential to Chinese sovereignty.
Taiwan transitioned from Kuomintang one-party rule to democracy gradually, with martial law lifted in 1987 under President Chiang Ching-kuo, opposition parties legalized, and the first direct presidential election held in 1996. The country has held peaceful transfers of power between parties since 2000.
The 2-28 Incident began on February 28, 1947, when a confrontation in Taipei sparked an island-wide anti-government uprising that was violently suppressed by Kuomintang forces. The crackdown killed thousands and ushered in the White Terror period of martial law and political repression.
