Frequently Asked Questions

What is the newest country in Asia?

Timor-Leste (East Timor) is the newest country in Asia, having restored independence on May 20, 2002. It was the first new sovereign state of the 21st century to gain independence, after decades of Portuguese colonial rule and a brutal 24-year Indonesian occupation.

Why did Indonesia invade Timor?

Indonesia invaded East Timor in December 1975, just nine days after the territory declared independence from Portugal. The Suharto government feared a communist-leaning state on its doorstep and sought to incorporate the territory. The invasion was tacitly approved by the US and Australia. The occupation lasted 24 years and caused an estimated 100,000 to 180,000 deaths from fighting, famine, and disease.

Is Timor-Leste worth visiting?

Yes — Timor-Leste is one of Southeast Asia's best-kept secrets for adventurous travelers. Atauro Island has been identified by scientists as having the highest fish biodiversity of any reef system on Earth. The country also offers rugged mountain trekking to Mount Ramelau, Portuguese colonial architecture in Dili, traditional tais textile markets, and some of the most unspoiled coral reefs in the region.
