Istanbul is the only city in the world that spans two continents — Europe and Asia — divided by the Bosphorus Strait. This quiz tests your knowledge with 50 questions about Turkey's geography, ancient ruins, cultural traditions, and modern transformation.
Turkey straddles both Europe and Asia because it controls both sides of the narrow waterways — the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles — that separate the two continents. About 3% of Turkey lies in Europe (the region called Thrace), while 97% is in Asia (Anatolia). Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, sits on both sides of the Bosphorus, making it the only major city on two continents.
Turkey has 19 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is one of the richest countries in the world for archaeological treasures. Ephesus features the Library of Celsus from 117 AD. Troy has nine layers of settlement spanning 4,000 years. Cappadocia's fairy chimneys and underground cities in Goreme are UNESCO-listed. Nemrut Dag features massive stone heads on a remote mountaintop. The ancient Lycian Way stretches 540 km along the Mediterranean coast.
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk founded the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923, replacing the Ottoman Empire. He moved the capital from Istanbul to Ankara, introduced a secular constitution, replaced Arabic script with the Latin alphabet, gave women the right to vote, and modernized education and law. His reforms fundamentally reshaped Turkey into a modern nation-state.
