Frequently Asked Questions

What is inside the Vatican Secret Archives?

The Vatican Apostolic Archive (renamed from "Secret Archives" in 2019) contains over 12 centuries of documents stored on approximately 85 kilometers of shelving. Highlights include the records of Galileo's trial, Henry VIII's request for a marriage annulment, and letters from historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Mary Queen of Scots.

How is a new Pope elected?

A new Pope is elected through a papal conclave held in the Sistine Chapel. Cardinals under the age of 80 gather in secret to vote. A two-thirds majority is required. White smoke from the chapel's chimney signals a successful election, while black smoke means no decision has been reached.

Why does the Vatican have its own army?

The Pontifical Swiss Guard has protected the Pope since 1506, making it one of the oldest active military units in the world. It was founded by Pope Julius II, who recruited Swiss mercenaries known for their loyalty and fighting skill. Today the guard has approximately 135 members, all of whom must be Swiss Catholic men.
