A normal full-term pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of the last menstrual period. However, only about 4% of babies are born on their exact due date, with most arriving within two weeks before or after.
A newborn baby has approximately 300 bones, compared to 206 in an adult. Many of a baby's bones are made of softer cartilage that gradually fuses together as the child grows, which is why adults end up with fewer bones.
A baby can begin to hear sounds around 18 weeks of gestation, and by about 25 to 26 weeks the auditory system is developed enough to respond to external sounds. Newborns can recognize their mother's voice at birth from hearing it in the womb.
