Journey through 623 years of Ottoman history from Osman I's founding to Atatürk's republic. Cover the conquest of Constantinople, Suleiman the Magnificent's golden age, the Janissary corps and devshirme system, the Siege of Vienna, the Tanzimat reforms, and the empire's role in World War I.
Key sultans include Osman I (founder), Mehmed II (conquered Constantinople in 1453), Suleiman the Magnificent (presided over the golden age), and Selim I (who expanded the empire into the Middle East and North Africa).
The empire declined over centuries due to military defeats, nationalist movements in the Balkans, economic stagnation, and failed reforms. Its alliance with the Central Powers in World War I led to its final dissolution, replaced by the Republic of Turkey in 1923.
The devshirme was a levy system where Christian boys from the Balkans were recruited, converted to Islam, and trained for state service. The most promising became Janissaries — elite infantry soldiers loyal only to the sultan, forming one of the world's first standing armies.
