There are 13 dwarves in Thorin's Company: Thorin Oakenshield (the leader), Balin, Dwalin, Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, and Ori. With Bilbo as the 14th member and Gandalf as an occasional companion, they set out to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug.
Peter Jackson expanded the 310-page book into three films by incorporating material from Tolkien's appendices to The Lord of the Rings, adding new characters like Tauriel, expanding the roles of existing characters like Legolas and Azog, and creating storylines that bridge The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings. The decision was controversial but commercially successful, with the trilogy grossing nearly $3 billion.
The most notable film-only character is Tauriel, a Silvan Elf warrior played by Evangeline Lilly, who was created entirely for the movies. While Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Azog the Defiler appear in Tolkien's writings, their roles were dramatically expanded for the films. Legolas is not mentioned in The Hobbit novel at all, though he logically would have been in the Woodland Realm during the events of the story.
