Rhaenyra, Daemon, and the Targaryen civil war that tore Westeros apart.
House of the Dragon's premiere drew 10 million viewers in one night β the largest debut in HBO's history, surpassing even Game of Thrones. The prequel series, set approximately 200 years before the events of GoT, dramatizes the Dance of the Dragons: a brutal Targaryen civil war between Princess Rhaenyra (the Blacks) and her half-brother Aegon II (the Greens). With dragons, betrayal, and family tragedy at its core, the show proved the world's appetite for Westeros was far from satisfied.
Each round presents 10 randomized multiple-choice questions drawn from a pool of 50, so every playthrough is different. You get instant feedback with explanations after each answer, plus a shareable score at the end.
Questions cover the Dance of the Dragons civil war, the Blacks vs Greens factions, every major character (Rhaenyra, Daemon, Viserys I, Alicent, Otto Hightower, Aegon II, Aemond, Criston Cole), the dragons (Vhagar, Caraxes, Syrax, Sunfyre, Meleys and more), the source material (George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood), key plot twists and battle outcomes, production details, and how the show connects to and expands the Game of Thrones universe.
That's the great debate among fans. HotD benefits from having a complete source text (Fire & Blood) and showrunner Ryan Condal's tight focus, avoiding the sprawl that plagued late-season GoT. Critics generally gave Season 1 high marks (Metacritic score in the 80s). Many fans appreciate the tighter cast and more focused storytelling, though GoT's peak seasons remain iconic.
The Dance of the Dragons was a Targaryen civil war that took place from approximately 129 to 131 AC (After the Conquest). It was fought between Rhaenyra Targaryen (supported by the Blacks) and her half-brother Aegon II (supported by the Greens) over succession to the Iron Throne. The war saw nearly every Targaryen dragon destroyed, and is considered the event that led to the eventual extinction of dragons in Westeros.
House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood (2018), a history of House Targaryen written as an in-world chronicle. However, Fire & Blood presents its history through unreliable narrators β maesters Gyldayn and Eustace, and the jester Mushroom β so the show had to make definitive choices about what actually happened in scenes that the book only speculates about. The show stays largely faithful while deepening character motivations.
