Kang the Conqueror was introduced in Loki Season 1 as 'He Who Remains' and became the planned big villain of Phase 5 and the Multiverse Saga. He was played by Jonathan Majors, who appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as the primary antagonist. After Majors was convicted of assault in December 2023, Marvel replaced the character's central role with Doctor Doom, to be played by Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr., who played Tony Stark / Iron Man from 2008 to 2019, was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 to return to the MCU as Victor Von Doom / Doctor Doom. He is set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars, in what Marvel has called a casting coup replacing the departed Jonathan Majors.
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) is the first R-rated MCU film, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine. It grossed $1.34 billion at the global box office — the highest-grossing film of Phase 5 — and featured surprise cameos from Fox's X-Men universe including Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Wesley Snipes' Blade.
