The severance procedure involves implanting a chip in the brain that creates a complete split between a person's work consciousness (their 'innie') and their outside consciousness (their 'outie'). The innie has no memories of the outside world, and the outie has no memories of what happens at work.
Severance was created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller (who also serves as executive producer). The show premiered on Apple TV+ in February 2022 and quickly became one of the platform's flagship series.
The Macrodata Refinement (MDR) department sorts numbers into bins on their computer screens based on the emotional responses the numbers evoke. The employees don't know what the data represents or what purpose their work serves — it is deliberately kept mysterious.
