Three feature films have been produced based on Roald Dahl's characters: Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) starring Gene Wilder, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, and Wonka (2023) starring Timothee Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka in an origin story directed by Paul King.
Roald Dahl was famously unhappy with the 1971 adaptation for several reasons. He objected to the script changes that shifted the focus from Charlie to Willy Wonka, was dissatisfied with Gene Wilder's casting (he had wanted Spike Milligan), and felt the film deviated too far from his original story. He was so displeased that he blocked a film adaptation of the sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, during his lifetime.
Gene Wilder originated the role in the 1971 classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, bringing a whimsical yet slightly menacing quality. Johnny Depp offered a quirky, eccentric interpretation in Tim Burton's 2005 version. Most recently, Timothee Chalamet played a young, optimistic Wonka in the 2023 prequel film Wonka, exploring the character's origins before he built his famous factory.
