Questions cover major deities like Ra, Osiris, Isis, and Anubis, as well as the afterlife journey through the Duat, the weighing of the heart ceremony, mummification practices, and sacred symbols like the ankh and Eye of Horus. One fascinating detail: the "Set animal" depicted on the god Set's head matches no known real animal and remains unidentified by scholars to this day.
Ra is generally considered the most powerful Egyptian god. As the sun god, he was believed to travel across the sky each day in his solar barque and battle the chaos serpent Apep each night. During the New Kingdom, Ra merged with Amun to become Amun-Ra, the supreme state deity worshipped at the great temple complex of Karnak in Thebes.
The Book of the Dead is a collection of ancient Egyptian funerary texts containing spells, prayers, and instructions designed to help the deceased navigate the underworld (Duat) and reach the afterlife. It includes the famous 42 Negative Confessions recited before Osiris and the weighing of the heart against the feather of Ma'at. These texts were typically written on papyrus scrolls and placed in tombs beginning around 1550 BCE.
Ancient Egypt had over 2,000 known deities across its 3,000-year history. Many were local gods worshipped in specific regions, while major deities like Ra, Osiris, Isis, and Horus were venerated throughout the kingdom. Egyptian gods frequently merged with one another — for example, Ra-Horakhty combined Ra and Horus — creating an ever-evolving and complex pantheon.
