Vishnu, Shiva, and the great epics — explore the rich mythology of Hinduism.
This Hindu mythology quiz draws from a pool of 50 questions covering the deities, epics, and philosophical concepts of one of the world's oldest living traditions. Hinduism encompasses over 33 million deities according to some texts, though many scholars interpret this as representing the infinite aspects of one supreme reality.
Each round presents 10 randomized questions from our pool of 50, so no two attempts are the same. Every question is multiple choice with four options. You get instant feedback after each answer with a detailed explanation, and you can share your final score with friends.
Questions span the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva), the great epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, the ten avatars of Vishnu, sacred texts like the Vedas and Upanishads, and core concepts such as dharma, karma, and moksha. You'll also encounter questions about festivals like Diwali and Holi that bring these ancient stories to life for over a billion people today.
Hindu scriptures reference 33 types (or categories) of deities, though popular tradition speaks of 33 million gods. Many Hindus understand these as different manifestations of one supreme reality (Brahman). The principal deities include the Trimurti — Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver), and Shiva (destroyer) — along with goddesses like Lakshmi, Saraswati, Parvati, and Durga.
The Ramayana is one of the two great Hindu epics, attributed to the sage Valmiki. It tells the story of Prince Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, whose wife Sita is abducted by the demon king Ravana of Lanka. With the help of the devoted monkey god Hanuman and an army of vanaras, Rama rescues Sita and restores righteous rule. The epic explores themes of duty (dharma), devotion, and the triumph of good over evil.
Both are foundational Hindu epics, but they differ in scope and themes. The Ramayana, the shorter of the two, focuses on the journey of Rama to rescue his wife Sita and is often seen as a guide to ideal conduct and devotion. The Mahabharata, the longest epic poem ever written with over 100,000 verses, tells the story of a dynastic war between the Pandavas and Kauravas, and contains the Bhagavad Gita — a philosophical dialogue between the warrior Arjuna and Lord Krishna on duty, righteousness, and the nature of reality.
