Unkulunkulu is the supreme creator god of the Zulu people. His name means "the very old one" or "the ancient one." According to tradition, he emerged from uHlanga, a primordial bed of reeds, and from there created all things — people, animals, mountains, and rivers. He is considered the first ancestor of all humanity in Zulu belief.
An isangoma (plural: izangoma) is a Zulu spirit medium and diviner who communicates with the amaDlozi (ancestor spirits). They receive their calling through a spiritual illness known as ubungoma, which can only be resolved by undergoing training with an experienced sangoma. They are distinct from izinyanga, who are herbalists focused on medicinal plant knowledge.
The Umkhosi Womhlanga (Reed Dance) is an annual Zulu ceremony where thousands of young unmarried women gather to present reeds to the Zulu king or queen mother. It honors Nomkhubulwane, the fertility goddess associated with rainbows and rain. The ceremony celebrates purity and unity and is one of the most important cultural events in KwaZulu-Natal.
