The Animus is a device that allows users to relive the genetic memories of their ancestors. In AC1 through AC III, the modern-day protagonist was Desmond Miles, who used the Animus to uncover Pieces of Eden left by the Isu (a precursor civilization). After Desmond's story concluded, later games used different modern-day protagonists while continuing to explore the conflict between Assassins and Templars across time.
