George R.R. Martin wrote the foundational mythology and backstory for Elden Ring's world, known as the Lands Between. FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki then built the game's narrative, characters, and world design on top of Martin's mythos. Martin created the overarching lore of the Erdtree, the Greater Will, and the demigod lineage, while Miyazaki shaped the in-game storytelling.

Elden Ring is generally considered more accessible than Dark Souls thanks to its open-world design, which lets players explore freely and level up before tackling difficult bosses. Spirit Ashes summons, the Mimic Tear, and the ability to ride Torrent also make encounters more manageable. However, some late-game bosses like Malenia are among the hardest in any FromSoftware title.

Malenia, Blade of Miquella is widely considered the hardest boss in Elden Ring. She has two phases, heals with every hit she lands, and her Waterfowl Dance attack is notoriously difficult to dodge. She became so infamous that a player known as "Let Me Solo Her" gained internet fame for helping thousands of players defeat her while wearing nothing but a jar on his head.
