Overwatch earned over $1 billion in revenue during its first year after launching in May 2016, quickly becoming one of the most influential team-based shooters in gaming history. From its roster of colorful heroes to the drama of the Overwatch League, this quiz covers every corner of the Overwatch universe — lore, gameplay mechanics, maps, competitive history, and more.
Overwatch 2 launched on October 4, 2022, as a free-to-play title that replaced the original game. The biggest gameplay change was the shift from 6v6 to 5v5, removing one tank slot per team. OW2 also introduced a seasonal battle pass system, new heroes, new maps, and PvE story missions (though the originally promised PvE campaign was ultimately scaled back).
Overwatch launched with 21 heroes in 2016. Over its lifespan, the roster grew significantly, and Overwatch 2 now features over 30 playable heroes across three roles: Tank, Damage, and Support. New heroes continue to be added with seasonal updates.
The Overwatch League (OWL) launched in January 2018 with 12 teams and grew to 20 teams at its peak. It was one of the first major esports leagues to adopt a city-based franchise model. After the 2023 season — won by Seoul Dynasty — the league was discontinued. The San Francisco Shock were the most dominant team, winning back-to-back championships in 2019 and 2020.
