When Sega needed a mascot to rival Nintendo's Mario, three developers — Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara — created Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991. The blue blur's debut on the Sega Genesis helped Sega outsell Nintendo in North America for the first time, launching a franchise that has since sold over 1.5 billion units across games, spawned a billion-dollar movie series, and become one of the most recognizable characters in gaming history.
Sonic was created by Yuji Naka (programmer), Naoto Ohshima (character designer), and Hirokazu Yasuhara (planner/level designer) at Sega. The character debuted on June 23, 1991, on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.
The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released in 2020, with Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic and Jim Carrey playing Dr. Robotnik. After a controversial initial design was reworked following fan backlash, the film was a hit, spawning sequels in 2022 and 2024, plus a Knuckles TV series.
