Street Fighter was created by Capcom, a Japanese video game company. The original 1987 game was designed by Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto. Nishiyama later left Capcom for SNK, while the series continued under different directors. Street Fighter II (1991), the game that truly revolutionized the fighting genre, was directed by Akira Nishitani and Akira Yasuda.
Ryu is the main protagonist of the Street Fighter series — a Japanese martial artist who wanders the world seeking to become the ultimate fighter. Trained in Ansatsuken ('assassin's fist') alongside his best friend Ken Masters, Ryu is known for his iconic white gi, red headband, and signature moves: the Hadouken (fireball), Shoryuken (rising dragon punch), and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku (hurricane kick).
The Hadouken (literally 'wave motion fist' or 'surge fist') is Street Fighter's most famous special move — a ball of energy launched from the palms. Performed with a quarter-circle forward motion plus a punch button, it is Ryu and Ken's signature projectile attack. The Hadouken has become one of the most recognized moves in all of gaming and a cultural icon beyond video games.
