Volleyball Quiz: Rules, History, and Olympic Legends

Karch Kiraly is the only athlete in history to win Olympic gold medals in both indoor volleyball (1984 and 1988) and beach volleyball (1996) — a feat that has never been matched. From William G. Morgan's invention in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, to packed stadium finals at the Paris Olympics, volleyball has grown into one of the world's most popular sports with over 800 million players globally.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between indoor and beach volleyball?

Indoor volleyball is played 6-on-6 on an 18m x 9m hard court, with sets to 25 points (win by 2) and a 5th set to 15. Beach volleyball is played 2-on-2 on a 16m x 8m sand court, with sets to 21 points and a deciding set to 15. Indoor teams also use specialized positions including the libero, which beach volleyball does not.

What does the libero do in volleyball?

The libero is a defensive specialist who wears a different colored jersey from their teammates. They may freely replace any back-row player without counting as a substitution, but they cannot serve (in most competitions), rotate into the front row, or attack the ball above the height of the net. The position was introduced to international play in 1998.

Who is considered the greatest volleyball player of all time?

Karch Kiraly is widely regarded as the greatest volleyball player in history. He won Olympic gold in indoor volleyball in 1984 and 1988 with the USA, then won Olympic gold in beach volleyball in 1996 — the only person ever to achieve that double. He later became head coach of the U.S. women's national team, leading them to their first Olympic gold in 2024.
