As of 2024 there are approximately 34 megacities worldwide — urban areas exceeding 10 million people as defined by the United Nations. This number has tripled since 1990 when there were only about 10. Most new megacities are emerging in Asia and Africa.
Lagos, Nigeria is among the fastest-growing megacities, projected to reach 24 million by 2030. Other rapidly expanding megacities include Dhaka, Kinshasa, and Delhi, which grows at around 3.1% annually. Most of the fastest-growing megacities are in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
The United Nations defines a megacity as an urban agglomeration with 10 million or more inhabitants, considering the entire metropolitan area rather than just administrative city limits. The concept was introduced to study the unique challenges of the world's largest urban centers.
